Note: This material is provided for educational purposes only. Consult with a computer expert at MyCuredComputer for professional assistance and the best intended outcome.

The hard drive consists of sectors wherein a fixed amount of data is stored. The process of creating new files, deleting, and expanding existing files, may cause fragmentations and performance loss. Keeping your hard drive defragmented can make the hard drive read/write operations faster.

There are several methods of Running Disk Defragmentation. You may follow each of the methods below.

Method 1: Click Start | Run | then type dfrg.msc |click OK

Method 2: Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter

Method 3: Click Start | on Start Search or Search programs and files type Disk Defragmenter

Choose the drive that you would like to defrag. You will notice that there is an option to schedule automatic defragmentation. It is highly recommended to turn it on to maintain good performance of your PC.

Initially, Disk Defragmentation will analyze the selected drive and notify you about its recommendation, whether it needs to be defragmented or not.

To summarize, what Disk Defragmentation does is move the files in the hard drive so that there are no empty sectors between them. This will make the drive’s magnetic head access files faster instead of jumping from one sector to another, which can cause some lag. Maintaining your computer speed and performance is not limited to running virus scans and freeing space in your hard drive. To achieve its maximum level of speed, you have to make sure that hard drive can easily access files by doing a regular disk defragmentation.

Note: This material is provided for educational purposes only. Consult with a computer expert at MyCuredComputer for professional assistance and the best intended outcome.

Having a printer problem is one of the most frustrating issues a computer user can experience. In troubleshooting printer problems it is important to isolate the details, determine the cause, and then find the solution. These are a couple of important things to consider:

The hardware and physical connections between printer and computer must be good. The printer itself needs to be in good working condition, with a non-empty ink cartridge, connection should be properly setup whether if it’s parallel, USB, wireless, wired LAN.

The software (drivers, operating system, and program being used should be properly loaded and in working condition. The computer should detect the printer, and the driver should be loaded and compatible with the operating system.

To prevent frustrations in troubleshooting, we need to be able to differentiate these two possible causes. You can perform the following steps to check the problem:

Double-check the physical connections of the printer and the computer. Make sure they are properly connected. Turn off the printer and the computer. Unplug them from the power outlet and then wait for several seconds before restarting them.

Check if the computer properly detects the printer. In Windows, click on Start, and then click on Devices and Printers. You should be able to see your printer in this window. Set your printer as the default printer by right clicking on it and choose Set as default printer. If there is an error (indicated by an “x” mark), this is most likely a software issue. If this is the case, you may need to reinstall the driver. If the printer is not showing in this window at all, try to unplug then reconnect the USB cable of your printer to the computer or try it on another USB port. Observe if there is any noise, activity or change. Also, observe the system tray icons on the lower right corner of your windows screen to see if there would show a message that a device has been detected.

Printing a test page

If your printer is detected properly in Devices and Printers window with no error, you can try to print a test page. Right click on the printer icon and choose “Printer properties.” Under the general tab, click on the button that says, “Print a Test Page.” If you are able to print a test page, this means the printer, the driver and OS are functioning properly. If you are still unable to print documents on the program you are using, the program itself, or the printer settings for that program is not configured properly. Check to make sure the correct printer is selected on the program you are running.

Reinstalling the printer driver

If there is an error on the printer or if the printer is not detected at all, the next step is to uninstall and re-install the printer driver. It is very important that the driver should be compatible with the version of your operating system. Uninstall the printer driver by going to Devices and Printers; right click on the printer and then Remove Device. You can install the driver from the drivers CD that came together with your printer or you can download one from the manufacturer’s website. In older versions of Windows, you can uninstall the printer driver by going to Add remove programs in the control panel.

If problem persist, then it may be that there is a hardware issue, either with the connections, the USB port of the computer or the printer has failed and it’s time to get a new one or send it for repair. We recommend having a computer expert at MyCuredComputer assist you with diagnosing and troubleshooting your printer problems. To get started call or start a Live Chat today.

A computer is a machine that does myriads of tasks. The computer has quickly become an essential part of our daily life and routine activities. Computers come in different sizes and specifications depending on the user’s need. Two main types of computers are portable and desktop.

But how does a computer work? One way to better understand this is by knowing its different hardware and software components and their respective functions. Let us go ahead and take a look.

Hardware

Case. This is where all parts reside. A desktop PC it comes in different sizes like micro tower, mini tower, mid tower, and full tower.

Power Supply (PSU Power Supply Unit). This component supplies power to the rest of the computer parts. It comes with different wattage options to supply power to all devices in a computer.

Motherboard. It acts as the backbone of a computer unit. This is where all components of the computer are connected.

Processor (CPU or Central Processing Unit). It acts as the brain of a computer wherein it processes and performs commands and instructs the rest of the components to work their functions.

Memory (RAM or Random Access Memory). It stores recently opened data, so that the CPU can easily access it. There are different types of RAM such as: SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic RAM), RDRAM (Rambus Dynamic RAM), DDR RAM (Double Data Rate RAM)

Video Card. This is what sends graphics to the monitor. Most video cards are built into the motherboard; however those that are into multimedia and games generally chose to upgrade their video cards to accommodate their graphic demands.

Sound Card. This is what sends sound to the speakers or accepts sound from the microphone.

Hard Disk Drive. This is where software programs, files, music, documents, pictures, and videos are stored.

Optical Drives. A device that uses a laser to read and/or write CDs and DVDs.

Monitor. The computer screen that displays information, images, and characters generated and processed by the computer.

Keyboard. Used to type commands into the computer.

Mouse. A pointing device which allows computer users to perform different commands and operations. It generally consists of a left and right button that is used in different functions. It also can come with a scroll that is used in moving the page inside a window up, down, left and right.

Speaker. Used to produce sounds from the computer.

Software

Operating System. This is the main software that manages both applications and hardware of a computer.

Word Processor. The application used in creating and typing documents

Spreadsheets. It is used in working with financial data or anything related to numbers and used in creating graphs, and tables.

Database. Used to store collection of data for organization purposes, easy access, and software programs.

Presentation. Used to create moving or still graphics slides, formatted in a way that it can create a comprehensive layout of information.

Communication Software. Generally tools that are used in receiving and sharing information from one computer to another. Some communication software uses the internet in communicating and sharing information with other computers.

Internet browsers. Software that allows you to access websites and search/browse the web.

A computer generally consists of both hardware and software for it to work properly. This is only a basic overview of personal computer components.

Note: This material is provided for educational purposes only. Consult with a computer expert at MyCuredComputer for professional assistance and the best possible outcome.

It is inevitable that your laptop screen will accumulate some dust and dirt. This makes the text less sharp and pictures less vibrant. Cleaning the LCD display will help you keep your computer in pristine condition and the way it’s intended to be. So, what is the proper way of cleaning the laptop monitor?

The LCD screen is one of the most expensive components of your notebook and it is very sensitive, unlike the standard CRT monitors with glass screens that you can clean using merely any kind of cloth. When cleaning LCD screens, you need to be wise in choosing the right materials to use. Try to avoid using tap water as it may leave white marks on the screen . Avoid touching the screen with your fingers as they might stain or smudge the surface with oil and grease (unless it’s a touch screen of course).

Below are a few steps that MyCuredComputer recommends on how to properly clean your laptop screen:

Turn off the computer.

Prepare the solution for cleaning LCD screen. You will need distilled water or Isopropyl Alcohol. Do not use ammonia, acetone, or any strong cleaning liquids on the screen. Using harmful chemicals, can damage the surface of the screen

Moisten a piece of cloth using the solution and gently rub the screen in just one direction. Be sure your cloth is not dripping solution, as this could easily damage the keyboard and other components.

Do not use towels or tissue papers as the fabric may scratch your LCD screen permanently.

Do not press hard on the LCD.

Edges can be cleaned using any ordinary cleaner but make sure it will not touch the screen itself or drip into any components.

Always clean your LCD screen at least once or twice a month. Moreover, be mindful while eating and drinking in front of your computer since dirt from foods that may drop on your keyboard may stick on your LCD screen when you close the lid.

Maintenance of your computer is not only limited to virus protection, operating system updates, and security updates. Making your computer clean inside and out can make a whole lot difference. If you have any questions or need further assistance please call or start a Live Chat with an expert today.

There are several ways to recover accidentally deleted files. In Windows, it will first go to the recycle bin. For these cases, you need to access the recycle bin and select the deleted files and choose to restore it. This procedure will not work for files that have been “permanently” deleted. Examples of “permanently” deleted files are the following:

1. Files deleted that does not go to the recycle bin.

2. Files deleted from a memory card or USB flash drive.

3. Files lost due to formatting the drive.

Recovering “permanently” deleted files

Recovering permanently deleted files require utility software. This is possible because the drive does not really delete the file but rather erase the “marker” that identifies that file. It would remain possible to recover the file as long as the physical space on the drive has not been overwritten by another file. There are several file recovery software that you can download from the internet. One of the best one is Recuva. It is a file recovery program from the creator of CCleaner and it is a freeware. The makers are trusted among computer technicians so you do not need to worry about false software or this program causing problems on your computer.

Prevention

Prevention is better than cure. You should always backup your important files. Create several copies of it in different media like USB flash drive, blank disc, online backup, or attach the file to your email and send it to yourself.

The most popular operating system Microsoft has ever created is Windows XP. It was first released in August of 2001 for personal and business computers. The “XP” simply means “eXPerience.” It has been upgraded into different versions:

1. Home Edition

2. Professional Edition

3. Media Center Edition

4. Tablet PC Edition

5. Subscription and pre-paid editions

6. 64-bit Editions

7. Editions for embedded systems

The features and stability exceeded user expectations and made Windows XP popular over almost a decade. When Windows Vista emerged, 95% of users rejected it. However, most computers are no longer coming with Windows XP. If you have a Windows Vista system and would like it to resemble XP here is how:

Changing your Windows Vista to look like Windows XP is quite easy; just follow these simple steps below:

1. Windows Vista has the Windows Sidebar visible by default. If you don’t use it you’ll only find it to be a mess and it is just an additional running process that can contribute to slowing your computer down. To get rid of it, right-click on the Sidebar interface, then click Properties. Windows Sidebar Properties will appear and uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows Starts, then click OK. You need to right-click on the Sidebar again and click “Close Sidebar.”

2. To change the desktop to look like XP, you have to choose Windows Classic theme under the Personalization menu. To do this, right-click on the desktop and click Personalize. When Personalization appears, click Theme. Then from the Themes drop down menu, choose Windows Classic then click OK.

3. After step 2, you may be wondering where the icons have gone. To add Windows XP’s desktop icons, right-click on the desktop again, click Personalize, then click Change desktop icons on the upper left-hand side. When Desktop Icon Settings dialog box will appear, put a check mark on all desktop icons, and then click Ok.

4. You will notice the icons on the desktop are still larger than they are in XP. You may change its size by right-clicking on the desktop, click View, and then click Classic Icons.
