Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) Fix

The BSOD is a common error we experience in different versions of Microsoft Windows. A plain blue screen with white text and alphanumeric error codes may suddenly appear in your screen at system startup or in the middle of doing something. It is also known as a ‘stop error’.

The blue screen of death is usually caused by recent hardware and/or software changes made in your computer. Some examples are glitches in Windows updates, driver or firmware updates, or software installation. Hardware malfunctions and viruses can also cause the blue screen of death stop error message. When your computer gets this screen in most cases Windows is programmed to automatically restart the computer.

But how are we going to troubleshoot this kind of issue? First, we need to take a good look at the STOP error code. In order to do that, we need to prevent Windows from shutting down.  You may follow the steps depending on the operating system that you are currently running.

Microsoft Windows XP

1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
4. Under System failure, uncheck Automatically restart.
5. Click OK
6. Try to recreate the error message or wait until it comes up.

Windows Vista and Windows 7.

1. Click Start , click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click System.
2. Click Advanced System Settings.
3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
5. Under System failure, uncheck Automatically restart.
6. Click OK
7. Try to recreate the error message or wait until it comes up.

This method does not completely resolve the problem, however instead of automatically restarting your computer, Windows will freeze on the STOP message to give you time to get the code information that you will need to use in isolating the cause of the problem.
